History

| |
|
Carver was established in 1951 as the first Southern Baptist African American ministry center in New Orleans. Named after George Washington Carver, the ministry was built by local Southern Baptists with the Home Mission Board (now North American Mission Board) during segregation to reach the blacks in the uptown riverfront area of New Orleans. Although the faces, voices and ministries of Carver have changed somewhat over the years its basic purpose has remained the same: To present the Good News of Jesus Christ through a ministry of serving. It stands at the corner of Annunciation and Amelia Streets representing the care and concern of Southern Baptists everywhere for the spiritual, physical, social and mental well being of persons and families in the riverfront community.
Carver is a training site for both those in the community and the many groups and individuals that come to volunteer in the ministry. Last year approximately 560 volunteers were engaged at Carver. That number includes church youth groups, family mission teams, college groups, business groups and individuals from New Orleans and around the United States.
Carver has a mission church at the center which is the third such church plant. The first church plant outgrew the facility and moved to their own building. The second church plant stopped in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The current church plant started in September 2007 and is working together with the center staff to reach the entire family and thus change our community and city.
